Introduction
BODA's Monthly Check-In is a reminder that therapy can be active, outdoors, and fun while still being deeply effective.

A Note From Our Founder: You Can Miss Home and Be in the Right Place

Everyone talks about the first day of school.

Almost nobody talks about the month after it.

The first month of classes is coming to an end.

Whether your child is at the same school they have attended for the past five years or starting freshman year at a brand-new college, acclimating can be hard.

The schedule is set, the workload is real, and plenty of kids still don't know where to sit at lunch or who to text on a Friday night.

From the outside, it usually looks fine.

The grades come in, the texts get shorter, and the answer to "How's it going?" is "fine."

Kids are not in the habit of announcing that the adjustment is harder than they expected.

Most of them assume everyone else already has it figured out.

Some kids find their footing fast.

Plenty do not.

Therapy can help by building the small skills that make a new place navigable:

Tolerating discomfort.

Starting a conversation.

Getting through a week that has not settled yet.

You don't have to wait for things to fall apart.

A hard month is much easier to work on than a hard year, and in our experience, getting help early tends to shorten the rough stretch.

If the adjustment is dragging on, or starting to cost sleep, classes, or friendships, that is worth a real conversation.

We are here for that.

Tool of the Trade: Build Mastery

New places have a way of making capable people feel like beginners at everything.

New room.

New schedule.

New people.

No idea where the decent coffee is.

Build Mastery is the DBT skill for that.

Once a day, do one thing that's a little hard and that you can actually finish.

Not the whole semester.

One thing.

Confidence rarely shows up first.

It usually follows the doing.

Small wins stack, and a stack of small wins is hard to argue with.

How it works:

  • Pick something slightly hard, not impossible. Going to office hours counts. So does doing your own laundry.
  • Make it small enough to finish today.
  • Notice that you finished it. Most people skip this part, and it's the part that does the work.
  • Tomorrow, go one notch harder.

Use it on the days when everything feels unfamiliar, or when you catch yourself thinking, "I can't do this."

AT's Finds

  • Homesickness at College: What Parents Can Do — A Rutgers psychologist on why missing home and being ready to grow can happen at the same time, and how parents can support without solving everything.
  • How to Help Your College Freshman When They're Homesick — From the parenting site Grown and Flown: why the phone call every parent dreads usually calls for listening rather than a ticket home.
  • Time Outside Adds Up — A Journal of Adolescence study found that teens who spent several days doing nature-based activities together felt more socially connected, and more empathetic toward each other, a month later.

Featured Client Success Story: When Nothing Had Stuck Before

She came to us in college.

The anxiety had started in high school and gotten louder since.

Her parents had already found her three therapists over several years, and each one helped for a few days before old patterns closed back in.

What was missing was not insight.

It was anything holding the week together between sessions.

In the Accountability Program, that meant regular sessions with Andrew, a WHOOP tracker so sleep and activity were visible instead of theoretical, coaches checking in outside business hours, and family sessions that changed how the three of them talked.

She later joined a Catskills retreat and came home with peers she still talks to.

"I don't think I'd be the person I am today without BODA. It really changed my life."

"If you spend money on anything, spend it on this. It changed our daughter, and it changed us as a family."

— Her parents

She interviews for jobs now.

She walks into rooms where she knows no one.

Anxiety is something she manages rather than something that defines her.

Not every client's path looks like this.

But the piece she points to, accountability between sessions, is one we see matter often.

What We Do

BODA Therapy offers a new approach for preteens, adolescents, young adults, and families.

Rooted in accessibility, engagement, and accountability, we facilitate experiential therapy and coaching through familiar, enjoyable activities that extend beyond traditional office sessions.

We provide a structured accountability program to prevent backsliding and reinforce progress.

We also design customized three-to-five-night retreats in the Catskills, blending immersive outdoor experiences with therapy that is dynamic, meaningful, and often enjoyable.
My sessions with Andrew while skiing were among the most fruitful therapy sessions I've had.
There’s something about being in nature, having the space to move, reflect, and dig into issues that need solving while in such a beautiful environment that gave me the perspective I needed to get mentally unstuck. If you want high quality therapy while having an amazing time in the outdoors, Andrew’s your guy for sure.
