I Can Still Do My Job. That's Kind of the Problem.
It's Sunday, around 6pm, and the feeling arrives right on schedule. Not panic, exactly. More like a weight settling in as the week comes into view.

You'll open your laptop on the couch "just to get ahead," answer a message that could have waited until Monday, and go to bed later than you meant to.

Everyone's back from summer, the calendar has filled in, and there's a push to finish the year strong. You're keeping up. Your manager thinks you're doing great.

You also haven't seen your friends in three weeks, you stopped running in June, and the most honest description of how you feel is: exhausted.

That's usually burnout, and it rarely feels as dramatic as the word suggests.

What's Actually Going On

Burnout Isn't Just About Hours
The World Health Organization describes it as three things together: exhaustion, a growing distance or cynicism about your work, and a sense that you're less effective than you used to be.

Long hours feed it. So does working hard with little control, little recognition, or not much sense of what it's all for.

Being Good at Your Job Keeps You in It
The people who burn out tend to be reliable, and reliable people get handed more.

Saying yes is how you got here. It's also what makes stepping back feel impossible.

The Things That Refill You Went First
When time gets tight, the gym, the friend-dinner, and a reasonable bedtime are the first to go because none of them has a deadline.

They're also what was keeping the tank from emptying.

Sometimes It's Burnout Plus Something Else
Anxiety and depression can look a lot like burnout, and they can travel together.

If the flatness follows you into weekends and vacations, that's worth sorting out with someone because the approach changes depending on what's actually driving it.

What Doesn't Work

Treating a vacation as the plan. A week away helps, and then you come back to the same inbox, the same habits, and the same Sunday.

Downloading another productivity app to squeeze more out of a tank that's already empty.

And the most common one: telling yourself it'll ease up after this quarter, this promotion, or this launch.

It usually just moves.

What Helps

Talk It Through Somewhere That Isn't a Screen or an Office
If your whole day is spent sitting and staring, another hour of the same isn't very appealing.

Our sessions happen on walks and hikes in the parks where you already live, before or after work. It's easier to think clearly about your life when you're moving through it rather than staring at it.

Get Skills That Work on Monday
CBT helps with the thoughts running the show, like "if I don't answer in five minutes, they'll think I'm slacking."

DBT's interpersonal effectiveness skills give you actual language for saying no, pushing back on a deadline, or asking for what you need without it turning into a whole thing.

Make Recovery Visible
In our accountability program, a wearable tracks sleep and exercise, and regular check-ins keep the basics from quietly disappearing again.

It's hard to argue with your own sleep data, and it's easier to protect something you can see.

Take a Real Reset, With a Plan Attached
Our BODA Retreats run 3 to 5 nights in the Catskills, about 2 hours north of the city, built around you rather than a fixed schedule.

Less screen time, more time outside, and you head home with specific changes to make, not just a full inbox waiting.

The point of all of it is to get you to where you don't need us. We're upfront about that from the start.

When to Reach Out

If Sunday scaries are taking over, your sleep is off, you've dropped the things that used to keep you going, or quitting feels like the only exit, that's enough reason.

Reach out for a free 15-minute consultation. We'll talk through what's going on and whether working with us makes sense.

BODA Therapy provides therapy, coaching, and immersive retreats for preteens, adolescents, young adults, and families. Based in New York and the Catskills.
My sessions with Andrew while skiing were among the most fruitful therapy sessions I've had.
There’s something about being in nature, having the space to move, reflect, and dig into issues that need solving while in such a beautiful environment that gave me the perspective I needed to get mentally unstuck. If you want high quality therapy while having an amazing time in the outdoors, Andrew’s your guy for sure.
